The workshop has equipped me with a heightened awareness

The workshop has equipped me with a heightened awareness of the importance of aligning research outcomes with Māori health needs. Moving forward, I plan to integrate this valuable insight into my research practices, ensuring that the outcomes are not only scientifically sound but also culturally sensitive. The workshop emphasized the significance of customization in research methods to accommodate cultural differences, and I am committed to incorporating these considerations into my work. By embracing a culturally informed approach, I aim to contribute to research that not only meets the highest standards of academic rigor but also respects and responds to the unique health needs of the Māori community.

The discussions were an opportunity to ask harder or more in depth questions

"I think the discussions were the most informative part. The lecture parts were also helpful to guide the discussion and ensure we all had background information, but the discussions were an opportunity to ask harder or more in depth questions."

Workshop Feedback
The discussions were really helpful

"I was a novice so it was all new. I initially thought the Treaty had a generally negative association due to the incorrect translations and use to further oppression, so I learned how by honoring the te reo version that true sovereignty remains with the Māori. I also learned quite a bit about historical experiences with research and health. The research frameworks were also all new. The discussions were really helpful. I'm glad to have somewhere I can ask my ignorant questions."

I feel empowered

“I have learned that I have a lot to learn! I attended this course because I want to develop the way I approach my research to be more impactful and equity-focused. I feel like I’ve evolved a lot over this course, and have started to recognise biases and gaps in knowledge in my own work because of my non-Māori worldview. I feel empowered to view my research through a more critical lens, and I now know where to start when I need input from more experienced researchers who are Māori and/or use Kaupapa Māori methodologies”

I have begun to understand

“I have gained understanding about my role as a treaty partner and how to describe my positionality in my research. I have begun to understand the best framework to use to ensure my research is following Kaupapa Māori approaches.”

Workshop Feedback
I think Misty and Kev were great

“The meaning of generating partnerships and the importance of generating/sustaining relationships, to me that is the most important thing. I’ve always been afraid of tokenism, and have a genuine desire for partnership, I think Misty and Kev were great at helping to facilitate this in a genuine manner. I personally found the Manaaki session really interesting and I would love to attend more of these when I’m able.”

Workshop Feedback
Super Interesting

“Attended Manaaki session, it was super interesting. Misty has been great with generating connections and reducing my fear.”

Workshop Feedback
I feel more confident

“ As Pākehā, I’m a partner in our past and our future, and this comes not just with responsibilities but also with rights. It’s ok for me to share what I know, and what I can bring, and it’s ok to simply start where I am, and respectfully ask questions when I’m not sure (which is a lot of the time). I feel more confident as an ally, as though I’ve found my feet and understand where I am, and where I’d like to go. ”

Invigorating group discussions

"One of the standout aspects that I truly enjoyed from the workshops was the invigorating group discussions. The exchange of ideas and perspectives among participants was not only insightful but also deeply inspiring. Despite the diversity in our backgrounds, it was heartening to witness a shared commitment among all participants to do the right thing."

Evating my awareness of equity issues

"The discussions, questions, and examples shared by IUE kaimahi and the broader rōpu significantly enriched my workshop experience by elevating my awareness of equity issues and emphasizing the imperative for transformative changes in public services. The insights provided by IUE kaimahi, in particular, offered a unique and valuable perspective, shedding light on the practical challenges and opportunities for achieving equity within our public services. The diverse range of examples and questions posed by the wider rōpu facilitated a deeper understanding of the complexities surrounding equity issues. This multifaceted exploration not only broadened my perspective but also underscored the urgency for systemic change."

Workshop Feedback
I'm glad there are people willing to answer these questions

"I'm glad there are people willing to answer these questions since I don't want to burden my friends/ colleagues/ co-workers/ students with answering these questions as doing so could be unsafe for them."

Workshop Feedback
I felt that Misty listened to any opinions

“I felt that Misty listened to any opinions, and gently provided other viewpoints, even when she disagreed with what I said and thought I might have expressed it due to ignorance.”

Workshop Feedback
There is a need for ongoing effort to engage

“Difficult conversations are ok to sometimes have to address unconscious bias. There is a need for ongoing effort to engage with Māori both as a clinician and in research to actually enable equity.”

Workshop Feedback
Thank you very much

“An important thing for me was feeling ok that I don’t know enough still (even though the course was great - it's just a big topic and it takes time and work); but that it is a partnership and there is support when you don’t know everything. By engaging with others (like the team at IUE), the best outcomes in clinical practice and research can be achieved. Thank you very much Misty, Kev and team. ”

Workshop Feedback
Taking active steps

“Actively engaging conversations to address issues pertaining ethnic inequality and inequity, specifically pertaining to Māori. Taking active steps to better understand the Māori worldview and especially view of health and implementing this education in clinical practice. In addition to above, actively sharing information learned from this workshop to colleagues and recommending this course to colleagues in the research and clinical space. ”

Workshop Feedback
Completely Engaging

“ I’m motivated to keep learning, by reading, listening, watching, and asking. There are so many ways to keep improving my understanding. This workshop series is the best thing I’ve done so far, it has felt the safest, the most genuine, and honest, and been completely engaging. It’s helped me think and reflect in new ways, and I’m excited to keep being responsible for my own learning. I’m not sure yet what ongoing relationships might arise from being part of the series. But I feel more ready. ”

I am feeling empowered

“I am feeling empowered to address inequity for Maori and other disadvantaged groups. I am investing in relationships with this organization for future collaborative work. I feel more confident in my ability to take significant actions and not be a bystander. ”
