Tūmahi Whiti Makutu Kairangahau Wānanga is Iwi United Engaged's annual wānanga, bringing together researchers, health professionals, educators, community organisations, and Māori communities to explore how research can better support Māori aspirations and contribute to improved Māori health and wellbeing outcomes.

Grounded in Te Tiriti o Waitangi and guided by an equity-focused approach, the wānanga creates opportunities for Tangata Whenua and Tangata Tiriti to strengthen relationships, deepen understanding, and explore how we can work together to achieve Pae Ora – healthy futures for Māori.

Participants will engage with Te Ao Māori worldviews, Mātauranga Māori, and Kaupapa Māori approaches that support meaningful and culturally responsive practice within research, health, education, and community settings. Through shared learning, discussion, and collaboration, participants will examine how research can genuinely uphold Tino Rangatiratanga, strengthen partnerships with Māori communities, and contribute to more equitable outcomes.

Central to the kaupapa is the understanding that Te Tiriti o Waitangi established a relationship that already exists between Tangata Whenua and Tangata Tiriti. The wānanga provides a space to reconnect with that relationship, reflect on our shared responsibilities, and explore practical ways to create positive change alongside Māori communities.

As an annual gathering, Tūmahi Whiti Makutu Kairangahau Wānanga continues to bring people together to learn, connect, and shape the future of rangahau and hauora in Aotearoa through collective action, shared knowledge, and enduring partnerships.

Workshop requirements

To attend the Tūmahi Whiti Makutu Annual Kairangahau Wānanga, participants are required to complete one Cultural Confidence Workshop Series within the same calendar year as the Wānanga.

Our Cultural Confidence Workshops follow a progressive learning pathway:

Whaia Te Tika → Te Ao Mārama → Researcher to Kairangahau

Participants move through the workshop series in this order, building on the mātauranga, kōrero and learning from the previous series. The workshop series you complete during the year should therefore be the next series in your Cultural Confidence journey.

Each workshop series consists of two full-day sessions, and both sessions must be completed to meet the Wānanga attendance requirement.

You do not need to complete both sessions within the same month. For example, you may attend Session 1 in one month and Session 2 in a later month. Sessions must, however, be completed in order – Session 1 followed by Session 2 – and both must be completed before the Annual Kairangahau Wānanga in November.

To meet the attendance requirement, you only need to complete one full workshop series during the year of the Wānanga.

For example:
If you are new to the Cultural Confidence Workshop pathway, you will begin with Whaia Te Tika. If you have previously completed Whaia Te Tika, your next series will be Te Ao Mārama, followed by Researcher to Kairangahau once Te Ao Mārama has been completed.

We encourage participants to plan their workshop attendance early to ensure there is enough time to complete both sessions before Wānanga.

Kairangahau Preparation Day

As part of the preparation for the Tūmahi Whiti Makutu Annual Kairangahau Wānanga, all participants are required to attend one Kairangahau Preparation Day provided by IUE.

When completing your Wānanga registration form, you will be asked to indicate which Preparation Day you intend to attend. You do not need to attend for the full day, however, every participant is required to attend at some point during their selected day.

Preparation Day is an opportunity to prepare for Wānanga, ask questions and receive support from the IUE team. You are welcome to attend individually and do not need to attend at the same time as the rest of your project or research team.

As part of your Wānanga preparation, each group will need to:

  • Prepare a Kaupapa Māori poster to share your kaupapa and rangahau
  • Develop an interactive rangahau activity or space that encourages meaningful engagement with whānau and communities
  • Use Preparation Day as an opportunity to seek guidance, ask questions and work through ideas for your poster and interactive space with the IUE team

Your poster must be prepared in A3 landscape format. IUE has provided poster templates, which are available to download below and can be used to support the development of your poster.

If your group has attended a previous Kairangahau Wānanga, you are more than welcome to reuse or update a poster from a previous year, provided it continues to appropriately represent your current kaupapa and rangahau.

Interactive Rangahau Space

Alongside your poster, each group is required to develop an interactive activity or experience that supports engagement with Māori and Pasifika whānau and communities.

During the marae-based Wānanga experience, your poster and interactive rangahau space will provide an opportunity to share your mahi in a way that is accessible, engaging and encourages kōrero and connection. We encourage you to think creatively about how whānau can interact with, experience or contribute to your kaupapa rather than simply being presented with information.

These Kaupapa Māori engagement components are a compulsory part of the Wānanga preparation process. IUE has a responsibility to ensure a safe, respectful and supportive learning environment that upholds the mana of all participants, whānau and communities involved.
