The Southern Series is an annual Iwi United Engaged (IUE) initiative focused on strengthening and nurturing meaningful relationships with our southern whānau through kanohi ki te kanohi connection, shared learning and whakawhanaungatanga.
Held each year in Ōtākou (Otago) during July or August, the Southern Series enables IUE to connect directly with whānau, communities and organisations who may not always have the opportunity to travel to Tāmaki Makaurau for our Auckland-based programmes and events.
During our week in the South, IUE delivers two Cultural Confidence workshops, with workshop topics changing each year in response to the needs, interests and aspirations of our southern whānau. The week also creates opportunities to reconnect with existing partners, build new relationships and create space for meaningful kōrero across research, health, education and community sectors.
Our Canterbury whānau are also encouraged to join us in Ōtākou, creating further opportunities to bring our wider South Island whānau together to share knowledge, strengthen connections and learn alongside one another.
More than a workshop series, the Southern Series reflects IUE’s ongoing commitment to ensuring our relationships extend beyond geographical boundaries and remain grounded in connection, collaboration and whakawhanaungatanga.

How do I attend
IUE releases an annual event schedule with the Southern Series dates and registration links. Participants can register to attend one or both of the Cultural Confidence workshops offered during the week.
IUE also holds a Kairangahau Preparation Day to support our southern whānau preparing for the Annual Kairangahau Wānanga. Time is also set aside throughout the week for kanohi ki te kanohi hui with the IUE team to kōrero about grants, upcoming projects or other areas where support may be needed.
While we encourage kanohi ki te kanohi connection while we are in the South, Zoom hui can also be arranged where needed. You do not have to be based in the South to connect with us during this time; however, our southern whānau will be prioritised for hui scheduling during Southern Series week.
Can I just attend the Preparation Day
Yes. You are welcome to attend just the Kairangahau Preparation Day or arrange a hui with the IUE team during the Southern Series. There are no additional requirements or workshop attendance requirements to do either.
These opportunities are available to provide support, answer questions and make the most of having the IUE team available kanohi ki te kanohi while we are in the South.
Can I still attend the workshops if I have to leave early or arrive late
Yes. We understand that other commitments may mean you need to arrive late or leave early, and you are still welcome to attend.
IUE is here to support your continued journey through the Cultural Confidence Workshop Series, and we encourage you to attend where you can. If you know in advance that you will be arriving late or leaving early, please let the IUE team know.
What do I need to attend the workshops
Prior to the workshop, IUE will send out communications confirming the venue, times and any other important information you need to know. You will also receive a workshop resource package, which you are welcome to read either before or after the workshop.
On the day, all you need to bring is yourself and something to take notes with – whether that’s a pen and paper, laptop or another device. Whatever works best for you
What happens if I become unwell prior to the workshop session
If you are unwell on the day of the workshop, please don’t worry. IUE understands that people get sick and we are happy to provide a Zoom link so you can still participate from home if you are feeling well enough.
Alternatively, IUE can work with you to arrange another opportunity to complete the workshop via Zoom at a later date. Please get in touch with the IUE team and we will work with you to find an option that best supports you.
